Joplin, MO experienced a devastating tornado earlier this year. Three small insurance carriers are now insolvent and are being acquired by Missouri Farm Bureau. Missouri Farm Bureau will settle any outstanding claims of the three insolvent carriers.

Small insurance carriers have less financial cushion to withstand a catastrophic event. While consumers will eventually get their insurance settlement, they have been waiting almost 7 months.

Price isn’t the only consideration when shopping for insurance. Consider the financial strength of a large insurance company, one with local claims offices.

Many consumers feel if an earthquake were to occur in Utah, the governement would be there to assist.

Virginia is discovering, it isn’t easy to get government disaster assistance.

The earthquake occurred nearly two months ago and they are still trying to get FEMA assistance, meaning grants and loans and emergency housing assistance.

While they are waiting, I imagine buildings are sitting empty, families have had to find other shelter.

The number of natural disasters in the US this year alone has affected millions of consumers. Many were prudent and purchased proper insurance while others are waiting for FEMA to assist them.

Earthquake insurance is costly, because it will cost insurance carriers a lot of money to help consumers rebuild their lives.

In the search for health insurance, consumers are directed to many websites where they can receive a quote and apply online. My website allows consumers to apply online as well.

Dog bites cost insurance companies a lot of money. In 2010, State Farm Insurance paid 90 million dollars on 3,500 claims.

Over 412 million dollars were paid out in insurance claims in 2010 and the cost per claim is rising.

Umbrella policies add extra coverage in the event you are sued and your insurance coverage isn’t enough.

It won’t happen to me!!

15,770 dog bite claims in 2010 say there is a chance it will.

Insurance companies are looking at dog breeds and many are asking consumers what breed of dog they own.

60% of dog bite victims are under 12 years old.

Insurance Fraud Doesn’t Pay

Another quick story-
A correction officer in Connecticut was out on a Work Comp injury. Then he ran a 40 yard dash in drag trying to win Hannah Montana tickets. A photograph of him showed up in the local paper.

Claims Adjusters regularly check Facebook, Newspapers and other media to see if “injured” clients post about their skiing vacation, marathon race, dance party, etc. etc. etc.

Insurance Fraud causes insurance premiums to increase for everyone.

The airplane crash in Roy last night affected so many people: the homeowners who had their homes explode, the pilot in serious condition, and the residents who lost power. If you look at your homeowners policy it shows aircraft as a covered peril .
When a claim is filed, the claims adjuster determines the cause of loss  Then the policy is examined to see if that cause of loss is covered.  Aircraft is one of the covered perils in many policies.
If an airplane hits your home, your homeowners insurance should cover this peril.

We have had continuous snowfall lasting over 24 hours.  On a day like this, there are many auto accidents.  This is where, “the rubber meets the road”, so to speak.  Consumers discover that the cheap auto insurance they switched to, didn’t provide enough coverage to meet their needs.  Stranded in below freezing temps, they realize they don’t have towing, rental car reimbursement or collision coverage to repair damage to their vehicle.
Cheap auto insurance typically, is just state minimum limits of liability. Many consumers or agents also remove uninsured motorist coverage which is crucial in a serious accident.  If you are seriously injured in an auto accident, the other driver may be uninsured.  Uninsured motorist coverage provides coverage for your medical bills.
Think twice before you choose cheap auto insurance.
